Deadbeats
In times of trouble, whatever you do, don’t lose your sense of humor. Call an old friend out of the blue, share a few stories and a coupla good laughs. Sure as hell, it’ll help you make it through another day. Too many people are taking things and themselves way too seriously.
Here’s a real hound dog for you. 32 years ago, my agency named and designed the logo and signage for Tailgate Picnic, my sister Alicia’s deli. Last week, we updated the look and had a new sign installed. My sister and her baloney-slicing sidekicks are known smart-alecks. So this time around, we added a slogan line beneath the logo:
Holy Bullfrog Johnson! All hell broke loose. People called to complain. Some customers said they wouldn’t come back. “Why would you say that?” ”What’s wrong with you guys?” Someone even called the Village Commons management office. I wouldn’t be surprised if they called Mount Holyoke College, who owns the property, and told the college to evict them.
Are you kidding me, Wanda? It’s a tongue-in-cheek line designed to lighten things up. See what I mean about no sense of humor? We’re in trouble, folks.
If it was my call, I would have made the slogan on the sign bigger and bolder, but my sister had us remove it. They do have some new T-shirts, though:
It’s like Buck Norman always said, “No crybabies, no whiners. Ya gotta find the upbeat in the downbeat.”
Have a good Thanksgiving and keep your dukes up.
