Pie In The Sky
Hey, big city rents are skyrocketing more than ever. In New York, private equity firms have been scooping up a lot of the smaller apartment blocks, which have traditionally been independently owned. You know what it means when private equity firms take the reins, Baboon Sheehan. Rents go up and maintenance goes down. Good luck if your heat or AC hits the skids.
Some people are still doing their part to keep the neighborhood alive. In East Boston, Sam Sokol bought an apartment building and opened an outpost of his Newbury Street pizza joint Dirty Water Dough, named after “Dirty Water” by the Standells, a Sox fan favorite. Good name. So his shop is located on the street level and with all the neighborhood rental competition, he was looking for an edge.
If you live above a pizza shop, you have to deal with a little extra noise and some food smell, so Sokol figured tenants should get a little extra benefit. So now all his tenants get free pizza once a week. People come in to grab their pie and chat it up with the crew at the shop. They’ve become friends. This is good, Hawk Harrigan. When Sokol was asked if he’d ever get rid of this perk, he said, “If you live above the restaurant, you will always have the privilege.” Now that’s goin’, neighborhood baby! Happy Labor Day.
Keep your dukes up.
