family Feud

This week, The Wall Street Journal ran a story with the headline “The Goal For Super Bowl Advertisers This Year Was To Avoid Offending Anyone.” Well, Bobby Kennedy, Jr.’s riff on his uncle Jack’s old campaign ad certainly got all his relatives going bullwinkle on him.

The old code used to be Kennedys don’t criticize Kennedys in public. That be over, Baboon Sheehan. The media loves it when the Kennedy family goes after RFK, Jr. And their reaction to his Super Bowl TV spot was the best thing that could have happened for his campaign.

This spot was goofy and retro with wackball visuals and a fun jingle. A refreshing change from the usual attack ads. And if anyone in America missed it during the big game, they’d definitely saw the media coverage. It cost seven million big ones to place the ad, but they got a good bang for their buck. Especially since Taylor Swift’s attendance increased viewership by millions. Taylor actually dated Bobby’s son Conor when he attended Deerfield Academy up the road.

I’ve known Bobby for almost 30 years. We worked together on the Riverkeeper campaign along with Hudson Riverkeeper John Cronin to force GE to clean up the Hudson and Housatonic rivers where GE dumped toxic PCBs for years. Bobby was also our Fishing Buddies attorney during our years-long fight to open closed Holyoke Reservoirs so inner-city kids could fish. So, all I gotta say after watching that spot is, “Shake it up baby, now.”

Keep your dukes up.
