What'd You Just Call Me?

The other day I spotted an obit for a great Holyoker. Jimmy Jackowski. He died of Covid-19 at 62. He was a friend and we worked together on all of Marty Dunn’s political campaigns. The obit mentioned that Jimmy was better known as “Cow”, which is what I always called him, and it hit me that Holyoke has always had great nicknames.

Off the top of my head I can think of Sluggo, Bozo, Baboon, Cannonball, Rattler, Pooch and Harry the Hat. But there are a million more.

In my own family, there’s Boop, Hoghead, Squeak, Twitch, Pants, Bug, Woodie, Bub, Vonda, Head, Moon, Grunt, Bloat,  Jimmy The Broom. We used to call my father Charlie Two-Shirts, Cartwright, Choo-Choo Charlie. It was the highest level of respect.

Speaking of nicknames, whenever somebody was a troublemaker in my family, we called ‘em Haskell, after Eddie Haskell. Sad to say, Ken Osmond, the actor who played Eddie Haskell bought the farm this week. He went from playing Eddie to becoming an LAPD motorcycle cop. Keep your motor runnin’, Eddie.

Got any good nicknames? Lemme know. And keep your dukes up.
