Love that dirty water
So I’ve been going back and forth to Boston a lot lately because my son Jake, who goes to MassArt, fractured his fibula skateboarding. He’s been coming home to see his orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Kelly Instrum, who has been doing a nice job on the kid. He’ll be riding the board again soon.
When Jake's in the car, I have to listen to his loud-as-hell, bull-hockey music. Now I guess I know what my father went through. But when I'm riding solo, I get to play my own goddamn tunes.
Since last August, when school got started, Boston has been really depressing and quiet. No vibe. No buzz. But last weekend there was a lot of traffic on the Pike and the lights were on at Fenway. They’re playing with fans in the old ballyard again. And I gotta admit I got little choked up. What the hell am I saying? I’m a Yankees fan. So what. I’m a Yankees fan and you’re maybe a Red Sox fan. But we’re both Americans, damn it, and we’re both on the same team.
I gotta tell ya, coming down Newbury Street the other night the outdoor dining was booming and people had great expressions on their faces. It was great to see the neat-looking heat lamps and a lot of people everywhere. The buzz is back, baby.
Fenway Park by the way has held all kinds of graduation ceremonies. Great move by the Red Sox. Really pitchin’ in, if you know what I’m saying.
So this next one’s a humdinger. I was on the Pike in Framingham when this bright yellow, souped-up lowrider came rip-roaring across all four lanes to get to the far left. I’ll bet my right shoe he was going 120 miles an hour. I said to myself, this is one jackwad I hope a state trooper nails.
Coming down a hill near Palmer, I saw lights flashing in the distance. Oh yeah Billy Bob, they nailed the jackwad. I let out a whoop as loud as the one I let loose on July 9, 2011 at Yankee Stadium when Derek Jeter rang in his 3,000th hit with a home run
Then, minus Jake in the car, I played the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” as a tribute to the Trooper and laughed like hell. So here’s what I gotta say…as goes Boston, as goes Massachusetts. We’re coming back, kiddo! We’ve been on the road a long time, but I like where we’re goin’. Keep your dukes up.
