Kids Just Wanna Have Fun
Got a good response to the outdoor shower ditty last week. People love the damn things. I got a call from a longtime friend and client who is building a house on Lake Placid. Until he read that email, an outdoor shower was not included in the blueprint. Now the plans are being redrawn. Way to go, Joe the Jet. I’ll be up there with my back scrubber once the plumbing is in.
Not everybody has the dough or the room for an outdoor shower. Another reason why it’s a shame that, during a hot-as-hell summer like this one, most public pools in America are closed. Public pools used to be a summertime staple, especially in low-income communities. We need ‘em now more than ever.
We’re also coming up short on lifeguards who taught a lot of kids to swim over the years. Drowning is the top killer of kids aged 1-4 and number two in kids aged 5-14. Swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88%. So as summers get hotter, we not only need to open up more public pools, we also need to invest in paying lifeguards and instructors to protect our kids and teach them to swim safely.
This country has not had a serious investment in public pools since the Great Depression, when FDR had pools built all over the country. When you think about all the money we’re chucking all over the world, it’s time to bring the bucks back home and start looking out for our kids.
Keep your dukes up.
