Thanks For Stopping By
Hey, I read a good one the other day. With so many classic old neighborhood bars shutting down in the U.S. in recent years, it’s nice to see they saved one on Long Island. When Montauk’s legendary dive bar Liar’s Saloon closed, locals felt like they’d lost one of the last reminders of their old way of life. Like everything else, they thought for sure some new lounge or boutique hotel would replace it. Maybe some luxury condos. Ya know, something exclusive, Rat Duprat. But Montauk’s old guard said no way Ray. They pulled together and are reopening the joint same as it ever was. The new owners don’t have the right to the old name, so now it’s called Marlena’s Pack Out, but the bartenders, the drink prices, and the décor ain’t changing. And most people are still calling it Liar’s anyway.
I read an interesting Oxford University study that said frequenting your local neighborhood bar may be good for your health too. People who regularly patronize their local pub are happier, have more friends, and are more satisfied with their lives overall. It's face-to-face conversation and laughing with friends that does it. It sets you free from the duties of everyday life. It lowers your blood pressure and stress. And we all know that bartenders are the best therapists around.
Another thing is that the neighborhood bar is the only place to go after a wake or funeral to toast your old friend, the late great Buckwheat Callahan. Truth is we gotta support local places. So where do you wanna meet? Griffin’s Cafe or Pic’s Place? Both great Holyoke neighborhood bars. Keep your dukes up.
