Down On The Farm
Yeah yeah, there’s this company called The Modern Milkman that I like a whole lot. It was started by Seth Bahler, the fifth-generation leader of Oakridge Dairy in Ellington, Connecticut and they deliver the best products from local farmers, bakers, and other makers around the region right to your home.
Oakridge Dairy has been around for more than 100 years. After watching Amazon’s consumer delivery success, Seth is attempting to diversify and build the company’s brand. Putting a cool spin on a retro concept, he developed The Modern Milkman, a subscription service with weekly home deliveries of top-notch, locally grown goods, including my favorite chocolate milk and Rhode Island’s classic coffee milk. But it ain’t just moo juice, Bucko. They’ve also got cheeses, meats, cookies, soft pretzels, and tons more. What’s even cooler is that you can get your own metal porch box with their logo on it. That’s old school.
When I got their mailer, it got me thinking about Jack’s Corner Grocery. My mother would call in an order and every Wednesday good old milkman Jack would deliver it. He was a real character and he’d always have a big bag of candy for us. Don’t forget I’m the oldest of 11. He’d call us down to the kitchen and start throwing around Atomic Fireballs, packs of Black Jack gum, 5th Avenue candy bars, Sugar Babies, Mallo Cups, Good & Plenty. All our favorites. Wednesday was the best day of the week back then.
Keep your dukes up.
