Fluffernutter
I always like it when some big hotshot like a U.S. government official has down-to-earth tastes and sensibilities. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen is a good example. At 77, she’s got a lot of gusto. She’s a big fan of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Like triple-D host Guy Fieri, she uses food to connect with people as she travels around the world. Hitting up local spots keeps her in touch with what’s going on out there. In the past three years, she’s racked up 300,000 miles and had some interesting meals.
She recently hit Sarge’s Deli and Diner (good name) in New York City where she had scrambled eggs with onions and home fries. Real neighborhood stuff. Being from Brooklyn, she oughta know. In Beijing, she stopped at a microbrewery and lowered down a few beers that use American hops. Before she met with the Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco, she took a detour because she really had to have an In-N-Out cheeseburger. Traveling through North Carolina, she had her motorcade pull over to Ray’s Smokehouse for a pulled pork sandwich and fried pickles. Hey Janet, Murphy’s Pub in Agawam has the best fried pickles around.
I think I’m gonna send Yellen an email asking her if she still eats fluffernutters like she did as a kid. Hot Table honcho John DeVoie just told me he went retro on a recent vacation and had a fluffernutter on Wonder Bread. I was so inspired, I had a couple myself when I was up in Maine last week. My mother used to always chuck them in my lunch pail heading off to Blessed Sacrament and I swear the nuns stole ‘em a couple times. Damn good, baby.
Keep your dukes up.
