We Need This Right Now

Yeah yeah, the timing couldn’t be better for a classic World Series between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. This is good. Real good. Hey, we’ve been Joe Palooka’d by negative political ads and wackball world affairs for too long. It couldn’t be crazier, right Squintz? This will be a nice break from all that bullwinkle.

USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale had some good quotes the other day. He said "This is Hollywood vs. Broadway, Rodeo Drive vs Fifth Avenue, Shohei Otani vs Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts vs Juan Soto." "The game's biggest stars are squaring off on the absolute biggest stage. This is Ali Vs. Frazier. This Coke Vs Pepsi."

This will be the 11th time the Bronx Bombers and ‘Dem Bums have faced each other in a World Series. The Yanks have won 8 of them but the last one—43 years ago— went to the Dodgers. Think of the greats who played in all those games. The Dodgers had Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, and Pee Wee Reese, just to name a few. On the Yankees side, the list includes Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, and Reggie Jackson. And who can forget Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956. Or Jackie Robinson stealing home in 1955.

My son Gainer says this could also be the real boost baseball needs. He’s letting his young boys Shane and Flynn stay up to watch the Kings of October. Youth baseball participation is down about 6% over the last few years. We all know why—it’s those hours-long, boring as hell T-Ball games and those damn participation trophies. Ain’t no motivation there, Ham Porter.

Hey, even if you’re not a baseball fan, ya gotta watch this series. It’s America’s pastime—and it’s been a long time.

Keep your dukes up.
