Zelensky Has His Dukes Up
Like me, you’ve probably been watching the news and are torn up about what's going on in Ukraine. Gets worse by the day. President Zelensky is being called a modern-day Winston Churchill, minus the Romeo & Julieta cigars and Johnny Walker Red. Zelensky has become a symbol of bravery, courage, and character.
When the United States offered an escape path he said, “I need ammunition, not a ride.” He also said something like, “The whole world is watching us like it’s a movie. Sipping coffee and eating croissants. This is not a movie. This is serious. Kids are being killed by Russian bombs.”
The Russians have bombed schools, churches, hospitals, and residential homes and buildings. These are war crimes. How do you shell civilians and kids? One thing Putin has achieved: He has pretty much united the world against him.
When I thought about Zelensky refusing to take the escape route, I could only think of one American politician who would have had the courage to stay and fight for his country. Donald John Trump. Just kidding, I’m talking about John McCain. No one else has that kind of grit.
The former heavyweight champion of the world, Vitali Klitschko (Dr. Iron Fist), is the mayor of the capital city Kyiv, and he ain’t leaving either. Ya gotta be moved by the outpouring of support from the people of Poland who are providing refugees with food, housing, clothing, and toys for kids. Also medical support for two million refugees.
American veterans are saying they can’t stand by and watch this happen. They are headed to the Ukraine in numbers. I remember watching all this when I was a real little spud at Blessed Sacrament School in Holyoke. A nun, Sister Whatever-the-Christ (I can’t remember her name), asked us to write a poem on war. Long verse. I went short verse. I found it the other day. A little dumb, but so was I. To me it kinda sums up Putin.
WAR
A toothpick and a matchstick had a war.
The toothpick lost everything.
The matchstick won nothing.
Ukraine, keep your dukes up.
