Off The Rails
Big freight train comes rolling down the track then rolls the hell over. This train has 150 cars and is two miles long. This chugger is passing through East Palestine, a small, poor town in Ohio. It has toxic chemicals and combustible materials on board. Later the burning chemicals leave East Palestine covered in the thickest black smoke. It looks like Hiroshima.
The freight train is owned by Norfolk Southern. Last year, more than 1,000 freight trains ran off the track in America. More than 25% of them were Norfolk Southerns. Norfolk Southern saw record-breaking profits anyway. It was easy. All they had to do is lay off thousands of key workers and skimp on repairs, maintenance, and safety measures. No surprise Norfolk Southern is owned by big private equity firms whose only concern is returning bucks to shareholders.
Yesterday it was announced Norfolk Southern would pay out $6.5 million to East Palestine residents. That’s a great deal for the shareholders, who collected $7.5 billion last year. The $6.5 million is a pea in the ocean. The cost of doing business.
T-Ball and private equity firms are killing America. Our political leadership ain’t doing such a swell job either. Joe Biden should have gone to East Palestine before Ukraine. Pete Buttigieg finally showed up in a corn fritter outfit. He’s a goddamn joke. The accident happened February 3. How fast do you think Joe and Pete would have shown up if it happened in Greenwich, Connecticut? And the previous administration is responsible for rolling back safety regulations and allowing greedy bastards like Norfolk Southern to operate this way in the first place. How about we start looking out for regular Americans? Like the ones who are out there now cleaning up this mess. With bought-off leadership and private equity firms, it’s always gonna be profits over people. Keep your dukes up.
Keep your dukes up.
