Where Have You Gone Woody Hayes
Wow, Georgia football coach Kirby Smart makes more than 10 million bucks a year. Nice chunk of change, Kirb. His Georgia Bulldogs beat the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs the other night for the National Championship 65 to 7. Nothing like running up the score, Coach. This is not the NBA. And it wasn’t a very “Christian” thing to do. Wink, wink.
It was the second straight national championship for the Bulldogs. You can bet your bippy that old Kirby will be getting a bonus and a big raise increase—and he’ll gladly take it. Hey, the poor guy needs the dough.
For a real good football coach story, let’s go back to 1974. The USA was slugging it out with tough inflation and President Gerry Ford addressed Congress with a talk he themed “Whip Inflation Now.” Wearing a button that said WIN, Ford urged Americans to be frugal. That together we could whip this bad boy.
Well, college football coach Woody Hayes took the Prez seriously. Woody had already won three national championships and was considered one of the greatest coaches of all time. When he was offered a nice raise that year, he turned it down. He felt it was downright unpatriotic. In the best interest of the country, he wanted to do his share. He felt he and his wife Anne could get along just fine on his $27,000 annual salary. Ain’t no college coach who would do that today, Pickpocket O’Toole.
That one’s for my old buddy Rickey “Mickey” Heath. He’s an Ohio State grad and a huge fan of the Buckeyes and Woody Hayes. Also, Rickey lives in Florida and is a tomato picker.
Hey, college football brings in big bucks to colleges and universities—but only to a select few schools. Most college programs lose money to the tune of 16 million a year on average. And ya wonder, White Bucks Flynn, why college tuitions are skyrocketing. I’m a Yankees fan, but do I think Aaron Judge is worth 40 million a year? No way. What the Christ, we’ve got teachers and nurses working 60 hours a week for our kids and families making dog-doo. What happened to the America we knew, Woody Hayes? That goddamn guy stood for something. Not a lot of that going around today.
