Big Deal
So, Buck Norman comes bebopping through the office the other day carrying a coupla big coffees and a dozen Donut Dip donuts. Best damn donuts in all of New England, Flippy.
“Pack it up,” he says. “we’re going on a road trip.”
“Where to, Buck?”
Buck fired up the Pinto and took me on a scouting mission for roadside giants. You know, those fiberglass mambos they have of Paul Bunyan and the Mohawk Indian. These babies are being restored everywhere these days. People of all ages love the goddamn palookas.
The first one I remember as a kid was in Chicopee, near a Ford dealership and the Shine Inn. First it was Uncle Sam then it was the Muffler Man and then it was some "Big White Guy." I think he moved to Agawam. I don’t know if he went by flatbed or if he walked.
I read a story about Danbury Township, Ohio where they restored Jacques, a 30-foot-tall waiter, and his twin Pierre. The locals ran a fundraising campaign and restored both of those blokes. The townies feel these giants are a piece of Americana. Buck Norman agrees. We're headed that way now.
I gotta bolt. Buck just came out of the packie with a couple of Heinekens and we’re back on the road to the land of the giants. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Keep your dukes up.
