Bless Me Father

Yeah, I did a ditty about a year ago about Robert McManus, the out-of-touch bishop who stripped the Nativity School of Worcester of its funding and designation as a Catholic school over a free speech issue.

Turns out getting out from under the bishop’s high hat is the best thing that ever happened to the school. Donors stepped up to the plate, raising $14 million so underprivileged kids can continue to get a high-quality Jesuit education for free. And the kids are excelling more than ever. They’re way ahead of other schools when it comes to reading and math. 60% of Nativity students are the first in their family to go to college, with many of them going on to prestigious schools like Brandeis, Morehouse, Georgetown, and Yale.

Not only that, but the students are also taught respect and people skills. They’re greeted every day by the school president and principal. If you’re a visitor, they welcome you with a smile and a handshake. That’s damn rare today, Onions O’Malley.

This summer, they’re adding a girls’ school. Nativity is an example of how to get it right when so many kids in America are falling behind. It’s incredible what the Jesuits and Holy Cross College have achieved since the bishop just dumped the school. Maybe the pope should show some courage and leadership and dump the bishop.

Keep your dukes up.
