Balloon In A Tree

Yeah, I watched the whole damn Macy’s Day Parade from start to finish. Just like I’ve done every Thanksgiving since I was a kid. It was good to see the big crowd back this year watching the baton twirlers, the marching bands, the floats and about fifteen of them mambo helium balloons.

I gotta tell ya, one thing that’s always fascinated me is the job of balloon handler. Tough gig. You try wrangling one of those bloopers. But how the hell do you get a job dragging a balloon down a freezing New York City street? It’s not an easy post to get. You need a sponsor and references and connections in the parade world. Like everything else, it’s all about who you know. Christ, even handling a balloon is political today.

So as the handlers started down Central Park West, SpongeBob SquarePants got stuck in a tree. A bunch of wiseacre kids started laughing and yelling, “Spongee is stuck in the tree.” I’d have done the same thing at that age. Maybe even today. Once they finally untangled the bastard, the kids were yelling to let it go. I would’ve done that too. What a sight that would be floating loose over the city. Ay, chihuahua!

All in all, a good Thanksgiving Day in New York City. Felt like working our way back to normal. Maybe we are. Keep your dukes up.
