The Best Of Humanity

Last week at the National Cathedral in D.C., Chef José Andrés eulogized seven members of his World Central Kitchen crew who were killed in Gaza by Israeli drone attacks. Crazy thing was the three WCK vehicles had large logos on their roofs and were communicating with Israel Defense Forces about their travels. What the hell went wrong? The WCK team was on a mission to deliver food aid in Gaza. Delivering food into regions facing a humanitarian crisis is what José Andrés and WCK have been doing for 15 years. They’ve provided emergency food relief all over the world, including warzones in Ukraine.

The chef has pulled his team out of Gaza after the deaths of the seven team members, but they returned this week to restart operations and provide desperately needed aid. Anyway, last week José gave a moving eulogy for his fallen team members, especially Zomy, an Australian woman who had been with him for years. “She was like a sister to me,” he said through tears.

Ya gotta take the time to listen to this eulogy video clip. These days, when somebody asks you to name a world figure you admire, most people fumble and bumble and sputter because they can’t. I can do it without blinking. Chef José Andrés.

Keep your dukes up.
