The Queen of the Cowgirls
Yeah yeah, last week Beyoncé became the first black woman to hit number one on the Billboard Country Albums chart with her new album, Act II: Cowboy Carter. Way to go.
And hey, she’s not just shaking up country radio, she’s also setting this summer’s fashion trends. Being from Houston, Beyoncé is no stranger to western wear. But since the album came out, cowboy boots and bolo ties are everywhere. The Stetson Shasta, the $450 hat she wears, has driven sales for the American-made hat company up over 100%.
One song from the album that’s generating a lot of buzz is a cover of the Beatles tune “Blackbird.” When Paul McCartney wrote the song, he was inspired by the Little Rock Nine, a group of black Arkansas students who were among the first to desegregate schools in the U.S. When McCartney heard Beyoncé’s version he said it was “killer.”
The people who hate the idea of Beyoncé going country have been very vocal as well. But hey, who gives a damn. She can do whatever the hell she wants. Yippee-ki-yay, long live Queen Bey.
Keep your dukes up.
